Optional Criminal History Assessment Tool (CHAT) for Senior Corps Projects

DISCLAIMER: CNCS has made available the CHAT technical assistance resource for the voluntary use and convenience of non-CNCS users.  Consequently, CNCS does not assume any responsibility or liability concerning how the CHAT resource is used, or for any results or consequences that occur from such use by the user. The resource is designed so that it is functional only after it has been downloaded  to the user’s desktop. Therefore, the user understands and agrees that any data entered into the downloaded CHAT resource by the user is considered to be self-reported data and is the responsibility of the user. The user understands and agrees that the user – and not CNCS -  is solely responsible for its use of the CHAT resource, and for any and all outcomes resulting from use of the CHAT resource.

The optional Criminal History Assessment Tool (CHAT) is a downloadable application for all Senior Corps programs that, once downloaded, allows project staff to enter information about volunteers and staff in covered positions, including individual entering the data to maximize the full utility of the resource. Once the information is entered, it is saved to your computer. Users can open the CHAT later to continue entering information, or to recall information at any time. Additionally, projects can view and print an overall status report for their programs, and a status report for any individual to check their Criminal History Check status.

Data entered into CHAT is not used for compliance or for validation purposes by CNCS.  No data or statistics entered into the CHAT will be transmitted to CNCS either directly or indirectly. All data entered into the CHAT is self-reported. The use of CHAT does not guarantee the data is complete or accurate.

To help users become familiar with CHAT, below is an introductory eCourse that provides step by step instructions for using the Tool. It is recommended that project’s review the eCourse prior to downloading and using the CHAT.
