Education Award Guidebook

The Ed Award Guidebook is a comprehensive resource that provides in depth information on the Education Award and its application.

The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is a benefit VISTAs and AmeriCorps members receive upon successful completion of their term of service. The award can be used to go to eligible schools or repay qualifying student loans. There are general terms that guide the use of the award. The award is subject to taxes.

There are ways to use your award to your advantage (school, loans), and the time it takes to learn about the award can help you make smart choices.

The way to access your education award after you complete your service term is through a My AmeriCorps account. You can send funds to a school or loan company just like with an online bank account. Learn more and register through the official AmeriCorps website.

With the passage of the 2009 national service law, changes to the award have been adopted. You can learn more from our Serve America Act resource.

VISTA members have additional options when it comes to post-service benefits. These include making the choice between the award and a post-service cash stipend; also noncompetitive eligibility when applying for federal jobs. Visit our VISTA page for more information.

For official language on the award, the Corporation for National and Community Service provides an overview on its Segal AmeriCorps Education Award page.

Recent programs that make repaying student loans easier (Income-Based Repayment) and erase loan balances for Americans who work at nonprofits for 10 years (Public Service Loan Forgiveness) are appealing to many national service members.
