Member Benefits

Living Allowance

AmeriCorps NCCC and FEMA Corps Members receive a modest living allowance totaling approximately $4,000 for the 10 months of service (roughly $180 every two weeks, before taxes). Team Leaders receive a living allowance totaling approximately $12,000 for 11 months of service (roughly $500 every two weeks, before taxes).

Education Award

Members are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of the program. Successful completion of NCCC is defined as service for a ten-month term and a minimum of 1,700 service hours. Pro?rated awards may be available for early departures from AmeriCorps NCCC, depending on the circumstances.

There is no limit to the number of service terms an individual can serve with AmeriCorps NCCC, however a member can only earn up to the amount of two full education awards. Please visit Segal AmeriCorps Education Award for more information. 

Awards, Trainings, and Certifications

Members can earn the President's Volunteer Service Award and the Congressional Award if they meet requirments at the conclusion of their service term. Ask you campus staff for more information.

Additional training and certifications may be required for certain projects. All Team Leaders will receive CPR/AED and First Aid certifications. 

Other Benefits

Health Care

Members are covered by the AmeriCorps NCCC Healthcare Benefits Plan administered by the International Medical Group (IMG). The plan is available to members at no cost and covers most non-routine medical services, limited preventative care visits (e.g. an annual ob-gyn visit for women), medical emergencies, surgical and hospitalization expenses and certain prescription drug costs. The AmeriCorps NCCC Healthcare Benefits Plan is not insurance, but rather a basic health benefit package, and will not satisfy the individual responsibility requirement of the ACA.

Federal Student Loan Forbearance

Forbearance is an option to defer payments on qualified (federal, non-private) student loan(s) while serving in AmeriCorps NCCC. Interest will continue to accrue on loans during the service year however, upon successful completion of AmeriCorps NCCC, the Corporation for National and Community Service Trust will pay said interest. Interest payments are considered taxable and are reported to the IRS.

Forbearance does not take effect until program enrollment (arrival on campus and in-processing completion). The member is responsible for any loan payments due before arriving on campus, at which point he/she can apply for forbearance.

Child Care Allowance

Child care allowance is available to members who are custodial or joint-custodial parents. The allowance is for expenses related to day care. Members who qualify for this benefit need to complete the necessary forms and provide proof of dependent children (i.e., birth certificate). Children are not allowed to accompany members during the service term.

College Credits

AmeriCorps NCCC currently offers undergraduate college credit for the following courses: Introduction to Service Learning (3 credit hours) and Diversity in Service (3 credit hours). A course in Core Supervisory Skills (3 credit hours) is available for Team Leaders. All courses require classroom, field work and a final exam.
