Strengthening Communities and Developing Leaders

AmeriCorps NCCC is a full-time, residential, team-based program for young adults, age 18-24 (with no upper age limit to serve as a team leader). Members develop leadership skills and strengthen communities by completing service projects and gaining life experience.

Teams, comprised of 8-10 members, complete multiple projects that address essential community needs throughout the United States. During the 10-month service term, members receive lodging, transportation, uniform and meals. Upon the completion of the program, members are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award equal to the maximum Pell Grant amount: $6095, as of Oct. 1 2018.

AmeriCorps NCCC Program Types

AmeriCorps NCCC Traditional Corps

  • AmeriCorps NCCC Traditional Corps partners with local and federal organizations to complete hands-on service projects throughout the United States.
  • Projects address one or more of the identified issue areas:
    • Natural and Other Disasters
    • Infrastructure Improvement
    • Environmental Stewardship and Conservation
    • Energy Conservation
    • Urban and Rural Development
  • Examples of Traditional Corps team projects:
    • Filling and placing sandbags in local communities to mitigate the impact of natural disasters like flooding
    • Educating citizens on sustainability and energy conservation practices
    • Constructing or repairing hiking trails in local and national parks
    • Removing exotic vegetation and planting new trees
    • Assisting veterans, homeless and senior citizen populations
    • Constructing and rehabilitating low-income housing
  • Project sponsors include national, community and faith-based nonprofit organizations, municipal and state governments, federal agencies, parks and schools. National partners include the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and the U.S. Forest Service.

Past Project

Environmental Stewardship and Conservation | Hurricane, Utah

AmeriCorps NCCC Team Silver 1 constructed and repaired essential trails in Utah’s state and national parks; parks that receive limited federal funding. The team learned about trail-building and maintenance, environmental restoration and environmental management. The team showered at the local aquatic center and stayed in a large vacant room at the community center. The center was equipped with bathrooms and a kitchen. Silver 1 left a lasting impression on the Hurricane community and grew tremendously as a team.

AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps

In an effort to strengthen the federal government’s disaster preparedness and response, AmeriCorps NCCC and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) partnered to create FEMA Corps.

  • AmeriCorps NCCC-FEMA Corps teams train and complete projects related to disaster preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery.
  • Projects settings are diverse and can include active disaster areas, recovery sites and FEMA regional offices.
  • Teams serve on a variety of projects, including:
    • Training the public on disaster preparedness
    • Planning evacuation routes and recovery plans for potential disasters
    • Compiling reports, managing and analyzing data
    • Working with nonprofits and government agencies to coordinate services for disaster survivors
    • Preparing disaster kits, tracking inventory and loading supplies in FEMA warehouses
    • Writing federal grants for damaged public facilities
  • Members are assigned to an AmeriCorps NCCC campus and region. Teams may serve on projects outside the campus region if needed.

Past Project

New Jersey Office of Emergency Management | Trenton, New Jersey

FEMA Corps Team Eagle 6 worked with personnel from the Sandy Recovery Office and New Jersey State Office of Emergency Management on crisis prevention, targeting the Ebola Outbreak of 2014. Members equipped isolation units at the Hagedorn Hospital and Fort Monmouth, and transported over 50 tons of emergency medical supplies. The team served part-time at the Ancora Psychiatric Hospital warehouse, sorting medical and emergency supplies and assisted with a local Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) drill. Eagle 6 played a crucial role in Trenton’s emergency preparedness and developed a variety of skills.
