United Way for Southeastern Michigan (UWSEM) mobilizes the caring power of Detroit and Southeastern Michigan to improve communities and individual lives in measurable and lasting ways. This 2016 SIF grant will deepen the impact of UWSEM's Bib to Backpack initiative, which builds a parenting continuum that recruits, engages, and empowers parents to improve their family’s self-sufficiency and parenting skills and, in turn, their children’s developmental readiness.

UWSEM will work with selected subrecipients to implement Bib to Backpack, to strengthen connections between programs, and increase childhood outcomes in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties in Michigan including the cities of Detroit and Pontiac. Working together, UWSEM and its subrecipients will support skill-building for parents and other adults who care for young children to empower those adults to expand their social and resource networks and increase their self-sufficiency and use of resources.
