The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that engages millions of Americans in service through its AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and Social Innovation Fund, has an established record when it comes to disaster response, specifically in Louisiana.

As of today, CNCS has deployed more than 825 AmeriCorps members to support relief efforts in areas affected by the August floods. These AmeriCorps members are mucking and gutting homes, leading volunteers, and collecting and distributing donated goods. As a result of their efforts, more than 7,844 cubic yards of debris has been cleared and teams have completed mucking and gutting more than 110 homes, with many more in process.

Next weekend, AmeriCorps will participate in September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance by leading a blitz muck-and-gut operation in Baton Rouge, calling on community volunteers to join the effort.

AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams are CNCS’s elite, specialty-trained crews deployed at the request of local and federal emergency managers. These teams provide expert manpower for everything from coordinating volunteers to donations manage, sandbagging to shelter operations, and debris removal to home repairs.
