Three teams of AmeriCorps members have been deployed to Hawaii to join assistance efforts for survivors of the recent Kilauea volcanic eruption and earthquakes in Hilo, Hawaii. The 20 young people, all of whom serve through FEMA Corps, a unit of AmeriCorps NCCC, departed for the island on Saturday from Jackson, Miss.

These members join the nearly 4,000 AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members who have responded to the California wildfires and Hurricane Harvey, Irma, and Maria.

As part of the federal government’s ongoing recovery efforts, the Corporation for the National and Community Service (CNCS), the agency for service and volunteering, sent nearly 30 additional AmeriCorps members to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to support Hurricane Maria recovery efforts. These members of the agency’s elite disaster response team will join the more than 75 AmeriCorps members already deployed.

As Hurricane Harvey heads toward Texas, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that oversees AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and the nation’s volunteering initiatives, has placed more than 700 members of the AmeriCorps Disaster Response Team (A-DRTs), including FEMA Corps, on standby to deploy at the request of the state and local managers. These teams provide expert manpower for everything from coordinating volunteers to donations management, sandbagging to shelter operations, and debris removal to home repairs.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) today announced more than $5.3 million in Senior Corps RSVP funding to support senior volunteer service in 50 new communities across the country. These grants awarded to nonprofits and community agencies will expand RSVP’s presence in areas previously unserved by Senior Corps RSVP programs.
