Among the many volunteer opportunities that RSVP offers to adults in Montgomery, Delaware and Chester counties, the Help on Call program has perhaps the most persistent ongoing need. The program provides rides, home visits, or phone calls to low-income seniors and adults with disabilities. It always has many more requests for volunteers than volunteers who can fill them. Currently, Help on Call operates in Montgomery County with 45 volunteers serving about 125 seniors and adults with challenges. RSVP programs such as reading to Head Start preschoolers or mentoring older students have drawn greater volunteer interest over the years. “Children are often more appealing to potential volunteers than the elderly,” admitted Help on Call’s coordinator, Jane McGowan.
