YouthBuild, AmeriCorps students clean Alton Fire Department grounds on 9/11

Members of the local YouthBuild/AmeriCorps honored first responders while commemorating the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks by cleaning a fire station grounds.“We did some background (discussion) on Friday, and we had moments of silence today as the events happened throughout that day,” said Monica Waller, lead GED instructor at Lewis and Clark Community College. “It is National Day of Service and Remembrance for America, we wanted to get out there and give back to first responders for 9/11 Day.” Eighteen students and four adults in YouthBuild, which is part of Lewis and Clark’s GED (general equivalency diploma) program, spent more than two hours cleaning the grounds at the Don Twichell Memorial Station (#1), 333 E. 20th St., Alton.
