A two-way street: AmeriCorps program offers benefits to service members, recipients alike

For Kafilat Akande, AmeriCorps was more than a community service. It was a way out during what she described as “one of the lowest points in my life.” Akande, a Frederick resident, was homeless and unemployed, living in the Frederick Community Action Agency’s family shelter. Her mother had just died, a loss that left Akande feeling depressed and paralyzed, unable to work toward building a better life for herself and her son, D’Quami Brown, who was then 7 years old. That was in 2012. More than four years later, her situation has improved dramatically.
