The federal investment includes competitive grants totaling $253 million, which will support more than 46,000 Americans in AmeriCorps service. An additional $137 million was provided to Governor-appointed state service commissions, which in turn will be awarded to state-based organizations to support more than 15,000 additional AmeriCorps members. The AmeriCorps members supported by these grants are eligible to earn more than $181 million in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards to help pay for college or to pay back student loans.
