New Orleans Louisiana Tornadoes
Event Summary: 55 AmeriCorps Members including SBP and FEMA Corps responded on February 7, when tornadoes swept through southern Louisiana. A total of six tornadoes hit the state with tracks as long as 23.3 miles and speeds as high as 150 mph. The Governor issued a state of emergency and preliminary damage assessments with FEMA are underway. On February 11, the President approved a federal declaration providing Individual Assistance for two Parishes (Orleans and Livingston). AmeriCorps members conducted damage assessment and distributed recovery information. FEMA Corps provided assistance to the IMAT team.
15 AmeriCorps and Senior Corps participants aresponded to a tornado that hit the town of Perryville on March 1. The ESF 3 tornado ESF destroyed nearly 200 homes. RSVP is assisted with establishing shelters while AmeriCorps St. Louis is engaged in early damage assessments in partnership with the State Emergency Management Agency.
