TTA Update for AmeriCorps State and National Grantees

1. AmeriCorps State and National Symposium – The 2017 Symposium will be held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, 2799 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, VA 22202, on September 12 – September 14. The Symposium is the required annual grantee meeting for leaders of State Service Commissions and national and tribal programs funded directly from CNCS in the 2017 AmeriCorps State and National grant competition. Details on the schedule, registration, and content will be provided in late June and throughout the summer. If you’ve never attended the grantee meeting, you can take a look at last year’s presentations here. In addition, there will be an orientation to the 2017 Symposium for first-time/new attendees on August 28, 3:00 – 4:00 pm Eastern. Participation details will be provided in early August. And I am happy to discuss the Symposium’s structure, logistics, or activities at any time.

I know that the dates of this year’s Symposium will be a challenge for commissions and programs who lead or participate in events on September 11. You are not required to cancel your events to attend the Symposium. Our hope is that you will be able to assign staff to meet your local needs and participate appropriately in the Symposium. Each year, as we are looking for dates and locations for the Symposium, we run into a number of scheduling issues in September. These issues include planning around holidays, end of the federal fiscal year, meeting space availability, and the funds available to support this activity. For planning purposes, it’s good to know that we will start the official Symposium agenda at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, September 12, and we will close the event by 12:30 pm on Thursday, September 14. The agenda is in development now, and we will be able to post a preliminary agenda along with registration and hotel details in late June. Please let me know if you have any questions about this or would like to discuss it further. You can contact me directly at 202-606-6814, or breynolds@cns.gov.

2. 2017 Regional National Service Conferences – We are half-way through the regional conferences, and major kudos to Serve Ohio for leading a great conference in Columbus last week! There is still time to register for the fourth and final regional conference, coming up on June 5-7, in Baltimore, MD. Registration closes on May 31, or when space runs out; here’s the link to the registration: www.nationalservicetraining.org/atlantic.

In addition, I want to draw your attention to the presenter materials available to everyone online for all of the sessions at all of the conferences. There are a number of sessions that may be of use to you at this time of the year as you are gearing up for member recruitment, subgrantee training, and more. You can download all presenter materials from the event website: www.nationalservicetraining.org. Just click on the link to each region’s event to access the materials.

Here are a few sessions of particular note from the most recent conference:

3. 2018 Training and Technical Assistance for AmeriCorps State and National Prime Grantees – As we look ahead, there are a few TTA-related items that are good to know. As you are aware, CNCS is in the midst of building a new grants management system to replace eGrants. Staff and grantee training for the new system, called Grants and Member Management or GMM, looms large in our training and technical assistance plans for the end of this year and all of 2018. You can expect multiple calls and webinars, previews at the 2017 Symposium, and more as we move forward on this.

In addition, our staff will continue to expand written materials and online courses to support our field and post those on the National Service Knowledge Network. Generally, program development materials and resources are located on the AmeriCorps page: AmeriCorps Resources | Corporation for National and Community Service.

We do not plan to fund regional conferences in 2018; however, commissions may choose to partner with their colleagues to provide local, state, or regional training events with their Commission Investment Funds (priority performance area 2). I will share any and all information about local events as I hear about them.

4. AmeriCorps Program Development Webinar Series – The PowerPoint slides and audio file for the April 20 AmeriCorps Program Continuity Planning webinar are now posted on the National Service Knowledge Network. You can find the presentation materials here: AmeriCorps Program Development Series | Corporation for National and Community Service. Thanks, again, to our guest speakers for the webinar: Jaclyn Kolar of OneStar in Texas and Ellen Damaschino of Share Our Strength. This webinar was designed for and delivered to staff at state commissions and national service programs, and the content is relevant for any level of staff member.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this update.
