CNCS Monthly Call Follow Ups: VGF, Open Data, Senior Corps Week & Education

Thank you for joining us for the monthly CNCS update call on Tuesday.  Here are several follow ups:

Volunteer Generation Fund:  The FY 2017 Volunteer Generation Fund (VGF) NOFO is available at this link.  CNCS is accepting applications from State Commissions for VGF grants that will be used to develop and/or support community-based entities to recruit, manage, and support volunteers. After reviewing the history, expected funding, pertinent legislative language, and stakeholder input, CNCS is continuing the eligibility provisions that have been used in past VGF competitions that make direct funding available to State Service Commissions.

State Profiles on Open Data Platform:  We hope you found the demonstration of the Open Data Platform useful.  Feel free to check out the CNCS Open Data platform, as well as the newly available 2016-2017 State Profiles dataset and national map. These data products have not yet been shared with the wider public, so at this time we ask you to not share beyond your office. We will let you know within the month when the platform is being more widely promoted.  In the meantime, please test out the tool and the data products, and let us know what you think at

Senior Corps Week:  We encourage State Commissions to join us in highlighting the extraordinary contributions and impact of older volunteers during Senior Corps Week (May 15-19) and Older Americans Month.  Please check out the Senior Corps Week 2017 splash page for facts, stories, and helpful resources for highlighting Senior Corps and promoting service by older Americans. The theme for Senior Corps Week is #SeniorCorpsWorks.  We will send additional social media tips next week.

Education Updates:  As shared on the call, Heather Rieman, Senior Advisor for Education Initiatives, is working on several products to highlight the critical role of national service in education, including a fact sheet, School Superintendent toolkit, and profiles of school districts using national service strategically.  Please contact Heather at if you are interested in providing input or reviewing the Superintendents toolkit, or if the Chief State School Officer in your state is particularly aware of and supportive of the role national service in strengthening education.

Thank you for being our partners in delivering national service around the country.
