FY 2018 Community Conversations Research

Executive Summary

Building Miami's Civic Health by Developing Civic Leaders is a community-based participatory research project that brings together stakeholders from a local community organization, Miami PACT (People Acting in Community Together), and researchers from Barry University to examine the role of storytelling in community organizing efforts. Through a research process using concept mapping, PACT's diverse body of community leaders and over 1200 members will have the opportunity to participate at all stages of a research process designed to strengthen social cohesion within the group, increase the impact of personal narratives and stories on political processes, and improve civic health through more effective engagement with public officials. In addition to these research objectives, outcomes from the project will include relevant fact sheets, videos, and website content about the research process and community members' stories that can be easily accessed by non-academic audiences, with special attention to the needs of communities like PACT, which represents members of diverse ages, classes, languages, and faiths.
