FY 2018 Community Conversations Research

Executive Summary

Western Michigan University's Office of Community Engagement requests a two-year award for a community-based participatory research project titled "Implementing the Imagine Kalamazoo 2025 City Master Plan by Conducting Go-Along Interviews and Coordinating Western Michigan University Volunteers." This research project involves the City of Kalamazoo and Western Michigan University two communities that are already working collaboratively to implement a robust and ambitious city master plan. Funds will establish a project team that will conduct between 49 and 93 go-along interviews. Interview data, including conversation transcripts, walking route maps, and digital images of neighborhood places, will be analyzed and triangulated for themes related to neighborhood need, city vision, and university volunteer capacity. These themes will then be developed into a coordinated volunteer action plan, the goal of which will be to assist neighborhoods in the implementation phase of the master planning process and to increase the impact of Western Michigan University's volunteer efforts. The action plan will be implemented in spring 2020.
