Executive Summary

The Area Agency on Aging, Region One proposes to have 8 MSY (16 new Half-Time) AmeriCorps Encore Members provide education to older adults on proper use of prescription medications, especially opioids, in counties served by the following Area Agencies on Aging in Arizona: Area Agency on Aging, Region One (Maricopa County); Area Agency on Aging, Region III: NACOG (Yavapai County); and the Area Agency on Aging, Region IV: Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens (Pinal and Gila Counties). At the end of the first program year, the AmeriCorps members will be responsible for educating 4,000 homebound and disabled older adults who are unable to attend community presentations, their caregivers, and family members regarding the dangers of prescription misuse, overdose, and sharing with others. Encore Members will recruit 32 community based volunteers to make friendly reminder telephone calls to participants.

This program will focus on Healthy Futures for seniors by delivering RX Matters, a medication misuse education program designed specifically for older adults. AmeriCorps members will be trained to assist in delivering the program to seniors who are homebound and/or disabled, their caretakers, and family members. The CNCS investment of $110,631 will be matched with $35,387 of which $27,169.00 is public funds from the State of Arizona and $8218 are private, unrestricted funds from each of the Area Agencies on Aging that are a part of this project.
