Executive Summary

The University of Arizona Center for Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers (CRR) proposes enlisting 40 AmeriCorps members in a STEM-focused program called Student Thinking Enrichment through Mathematics Mentors (STEMM). The members will serve as mathematics mentors in high-need schools in Tucson to 360 students. At the end of the first program year, 320 students will show improvement in students' mathematics understanding and performance as measured by growth/gain in students' benchmark scores. 40 college math mentors will be recruited and placed in 10 high needs middle and high schools to work with high needs students. Each mentor will meet with three different groups of three students weekly for 180-300 min each time for 28-30 weeks, providing mathematics support and mentoring. Eighty community volunteers (approximately 20 per Service Day/STEM night) will be leveraged during 2 National Service days and 2 community events. AmeriCorps members will coordinate two STEM nights, in which community members volunteer. AmeriCorps members will also coordinate volunteers during Martin Luther King Day to help students connect mathematics to social justice. This program will focus on the Corporation for National Community Service focus area of Education - improving student academic performance in Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Mathematics (STEM). The CNCS investment will be $130,883.00 and will be matched with $48,744 by the four partners and the University of Arizona CRR.
