Executive Summary

The Appalachian Forest Heritage Area AmeriCorps Program: Enhancing Assets to Benefit Communities proposes 40 AmeriCorps members who provide environmental stewardship, capacity building and community development in 16 counties in the highlands of West Virginia. At the end of the 1st program year, the AmeriCorps members will be responsible for public lands improvements and environmental education leading to healthier ecosystems, and capacity building and heritage tourism improvements to strengthen rural communities. The AmeriCorps members will leverage an additional 800 volunteers engaged in conservation and community projects. This program will focus on the CNCS focus areas of environmental stewardship and capacity building. The CNCS investment of $512,000 will be matched with $512,000, $147,700 public funding and $364,300 private funding.
