FY 2016 AmeriCorps State Commission (New and Continuations)

Executive Summary

Youth Guidance proposes to train and place 24 half-time AmeriCorps members (12 MSY) who will provide support for two programs directly impacting at-risk students at 6-8 Chicago public elementary and high schools. Twelve members will act as Sports Mentors for the Becoming a Man (BAM) program in at least 4 Chicago public high schools and 12 members will extend after school enrichment programming at 4 Chicago public elementary schools as part of Youth Guidance's Community and After School Programs (CAP). At the end of the first program year, AmeriCorps members will be responsible for helping up to 700 students attending some of Chicago's most disadvantaged schools improve their academic skills and increase their socio-emotional assets and resiliency. In addition, the AmeriCorps members will leverage up to 230 additional individuals who will engage in various volunteer efforts at each school site, including parent leadership, student advocacy, and assistance with school events, academic enrichment programs and after-school activities.

The programs under this application target the CNCS focus areas of Education and Economic Opportunity, as well as AmeriCorps funding priority areas of Education, Economic Opportunity, and programming associated with My Brother's Keeper, an initiative that is closely associated with Youth Guidance's BAM program. Programs are also aligned with the Serve Illinois Commission priorities of Violence Prevention/Intervention and Target Populations (At-Risk Youth in High Crime Areas). The CNCS investment of $157,239 will be matched with $131,022 in private funding.
