Executive Summary

The Energy Express program proposes to have 510 members, mostly full time college students serving as AmeriCorps members who will promote school success of children that are served in the program by utilizing research-based literacy activities and helping to maintain their nutritional status in community sites throughout West Virginia. At the end of the first year, the AmeriCorps members will be responsible for ensuring that the children's reading achievement has been maintained or improved through the summer months. In addition, the AmeriCorps members will leverage an additional 3,000 volunteers who will be engaged in one-on-one reading and writing, read aloud opportunities, drama and art activities as well as other tasks that support the success of the program. This program will focus on the CNCS area of education. The CNCS investment of $1,250,996 will be matched with $1,296,674 in local, state and federal funds, of which $18,500 are private donations and $1,278,174 are public funds.
