Executive Summary

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection proposes to have 30 AmeriCorps members who will serve as nutrition educators and community outreach members as part of their host site farm to school program in Ashland, Bayfield, Calumet, Crawford, Dane, Jefferson, Manitowoc, Milwaukee, Outagamie, Portage, Richland, Rock, Waupaca, Winnebago, Washburn, and Vilas counties. At the end of the program year, the AmeriCorps members will have delivered 5 or more nutrition education lessons, of at least 30 minutes per lesson, to 8,000 unique students in grades K-12, introduced at least 10 unique local foods into schools and districts for each host site, built and/or maintained at least 1 school garden per host site, connected at least 4 local farmers with schools, of which at least one will be a sustained connection, per host site, participate in at least 3 community events representing their program, and through a representative sample of 2,000 participating students, 50% of surveyed students will have shown a measurable shift in attitude towards healthy foods. In addition, the AmeriCorps members will leverage an additional 500 volunteers engaged in implementation of farm to school programming in the schools and communities.

This program will focus on the CNCS focus area of HEALTHY FUTURES. The CNCS investment of $191,925 will be matched with $247,237 of which all match dollars are public funding dollars.
