FY 2015 National Service and Civic Engagement Research

Executive Summary

Beloit College submits this Scholar grant request to CNCS for the amount of $57,313 to study the effectiveness of community-based learning as a pedagogy in undergraduate education and the impact that learning has on post-college life and careers. The question that drives this research is: How do civic engagement and community-based learning experiences in college shape post-graduate involvement with volunteering, national community service, and civic engagement in America? The goals of this project are to:

1. Use written field note assignments from an academically-grounded, community-based learning course to assess where pivot points in learning--key moments of understanding and maturation--happen, what catalyzes these pivot points, and how the course shapes academic outcomes, professional goals, and commitment to civic engagement and volunteerism.

2. Use surveys, interviews, and focus groups to follow-up with alumni of this community-based course to assess where their trajectories have taken them in relation to career path, civic engagement, and volunteerism and how the course helped to shape that trajectory.
