Executive Summary

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Portland (BGCP) proposes to have 33 full-time (FT) and 22 quarter-time (QT/summer only) (38.82 MSYs) AmeriCorps (AC) members execute a Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) high impact, evidence-based academic support program, AmeriCorps Project Brain Grain (APBG) in 11 organizations across 13 Oregon counties. At the end of the first program year, the AmeriCorps members will be responsible for increasing academic engagement for 4,300 students ages 5--18 as defined by specific factors including school and Club attendance, grade improvement, and additional data collected from BGCA's National Youth Outcomes Initiatives (NYOI). AmeriCorps members will offer academic support including: high yield learning activities (HYLAs--fun and academically challenging activities that increase scholastic performance); career preparation enrichment activities; Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) curriculum; and curriculum designed to prevent summer learning loss. This program will focus on the CNCS education performance measures of ED1, ED2, ED3A, ED4A, and ED27. The CNCS investment of $516,854 will be matched by the BGCP with $325,240 in private funding raised through foundations, private giving and program fees.
