Executive Summary

The Baraga-Houghton-Keweenaw Child Development Board (BHK) will have 45 AmeriCorps members who will provide evidenced based and informed education services to rural students at risk of reading failure pre-k- to 6th grade with a focus on early childhood years (pre-k to 3rd grade) in 14 schools, 20 pre-kindergarten classrooms and 1 non-profit agency, located in Baraga, Dickinson, Gogebic, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties, inclusive of summer programming. At the end of the 1st program year, the AmeriCorps members will be responsible for having assisted 75% of participating children to demonstrate improved academic performance in literacy (ED5) and 75% of participating pre-kindergarten children to demonstrate improved school readiness skills in terms of literacy skills. (ED24). In addition, the AmeriCorps members will leverage an additional 450 volunteers that will be engaged in delivery of the evidence based program Start Making A Reader Today and supporting reading related school activities and classroom projects. This program will focus on the CNCS focus area of Education. The CNCS investment of $501,077 will be leveraged alongside projected cash resources of $292,500 and projected in-kind public funding of $486,664.
