Executive Summary

The goal of Literacy Leaders is to prepare a greater number of New York City K-8 students living in high-poverty neighborhoods for success in school. Literacy Leaders will place 262 AmeriCorps members in approximately 50 school-based expanded learning day and after-school programs where they will work with TASC partner organizations and schools to: 1) implement embedded literacy teaching strategies across enrichment activities and 2) engage parents in literacy-building in school and at home. The anticipated outcome of Literacy Leaders is that 75% of students participating in the Literacy Leaders program will demonstrate improved academic engagement. Members' recruitment and training will begin August 15, 2014 with direct services to children starting September 15, 2014 and ending June 30, 2017. CNCS would support 42.1% ($1,224,036) of the total project cost ($2,907,004), with The After-School Corporation (TASC) providing matching funds of 57.9% ($1,682,968).
