Executive Summary

The Strengthening Communities, Improving Lives AmeriCorps Project is an innovative two-state plan of action to address rural poverty caused by no wages and low wages which prevent young people from realizing their full potential or from becoming contributing productive members of their communities. This project will focus on community needs to provide the supports, opportunities and relationships to improve educational outcomes for economically disadvantaged children and youth. Specifically, this project enhances positive youth development, improves workforce preparation skills, job preparation skills, life skills for young people in isolated rural communities, Indian reservations and military bases. In addition, this collaborative AmeriCorps project offers an opportunity for University of Arizona and New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension agents and specialists to build community volunteer capacity in 18 pre-identified communities by increasing the number and quality of adult volunteer and mentors in 4-H and other Extension programs. The University of Arizona will serve as the lead agency and fiscal agent.
