Executive Summary

Everyday Explorers proposes to serve public school students (grades K-12) located in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods of New York City (NY); Providence (RI) and Minneapolis-St. Paul (MN). The majority of schools will be receiving School Improvement Grants (SIG) or identified as Priority Schools. Members will employ strategies aimed at improving academic outcomes for students, as measured by student attitudes and behaviors. Specifically, members will: 1) lead inquiry-based science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) activities designed to engage students 2) provide academic support to students; and 3) coordinate service learning projects. Everyday Explorers' members will be drawn from local communities, will reflect the demographics of students and will be largely comprised of young adults enrolled in college. The first year of the proposed three-year project will begin August 1, 2013 and end June 30, 2014. The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) would support 37% ($425,695) of the total project cost ($1,145,939) with The After-School Corporation (TASC), Providence After School Alliance (PASA) and Youthprise providing matching funds of 63% ($720,244).
