Commission AmeriCorps State Fixed Amount Grants FY 2013

Executive Summary

180 AmeriCorps members (full-year, half-time) will train for an entire year in AUSL Training Academies (schools)--which are located in high-poverty neighborhoods in Chicago--with the ultimate goal of dramatically improving academic achievement for 4,500 PreK-12 students. The proposed project will begin on July 1, 2013 and conclude on June 30, 2014. At the end of the project period, AUSL's AmeriCorps members will be fully prepared teachers at all grade levels ready to impact the lives of children in Chicago Public Schools classrooms that have suffered for years, sometimes decades, of chronic failure. 95% of AUSL AmeriCorps members who graduate from the program are hired to teach in a high-need AUSL-managed school and 71% remain in education four years after program completion (compared to the national average of 50%). This project will focus on the CNCS focus area of Education. AUSL requests a level-funded CNCS investment of $72,000 (180 full year half-time members (90 MSY), $800 per MSY). EAP programs do not require matching funds.
