Executive Summary

Community Works AmeriCorps members will be placed in New York City public schools (grades K-8) in low-income communities that serve a high proportion of Black and Hispanic students and English Language Learners. Members will: 1) assist teachers in the classroom, 2) provide academic support to students, including homework help; 3) lead community service clubs and enrichment activities; and 4) organize school-wide service projects that engage the community. Community Works is designed to support students' academic engagement, as measured by student attitudes and behaviors. Members will be drawn from local communities, reflect the demographics of students and will be largely comprised of young adults enrolled in college. Member recruitment and training will begin August 1, 2013 with direct service to children beginning in September 2013 and ending December 31, 2014. The Corporation for National and Community Service would support 38% ($934,919) of the total project cost ($2,440,710) with The After-School Corporation (TASC) providing matching funds of 62% ($1,505,791).
