Executive Summary

Birmingham READS (Reading for Excellence Achievement, Development and Success) AmeriCorps seeks to positively impact children of the Birmingham City School District by focusing on CNCS focus area of education. Birmingham READS goal is to provide 900 students in Kindergarten-Second grades a highly effective reading intervention opportunity that enriches learning to dramatically impact the number of children who can read well and independently by the end of third grade. This will be accomplished, in a three year period, by utilizing the skills of 40 AmeriCorps members, each year, in inner-city elementary schools. READS members will engage the students in activities that focus on the five fundamental resources of reading, provide out of school time activities will include homework assistance at extended-day programs, libraries, faith-based and community centers, as well as, summer enrichment activities. Birmingham READS will also recruit 200 community volunteers to engage in literacy related activities. In addition, members and staff will assist the Parental Involvement Department with organizing family literacy programs aimed at keeping parents involved in the academic lives of their children. The CNCS investment amount of $253,372 will be matched with $269,839.
