Commission AmeriCorps State FY 2012

Executive Summary

The RI (Rhode Island) Vet Corps Project is expected to improve access to available resources over a three year period for 4,500 veterans of military service and their families in Rhode Island. Veterans applying, for a total of 17 AmeriCorps member positions, will be given priority since their experience serves as instant credibility with other veterans. Presently, there are 72,835 veterans in Rhode Island. A small percentage of these veterans take advantage of federal and state funded services and benefits for veterans. AmeriCorps members will provide statewide outreach and counseling with the goal of linking veterans to available services throughout Rhode Island. Eight Community Action Programs (CAPs) will form the platform for this activity. The 4,500 clients served by AmeriCorps members will experience a quantifiable improvement in their lives, as measured by Client Track. AmeriCorps members, who will also participate in service projects and professional days, will also be evaluated for skill improvement in social service. Westbay Community Action will administer the program and provide training to all members. AmeriCorps members will participate in service projects and career enhancement. The program will start July 1, 2012 and end June 30, 2015.
