Commission AmeriCorps State FY 2012

Executive Summary

Nine full-time and two half-time AmeriCorps members will leverage an additional 1,000 volunteers to provide supportive housing, supportive services, employment readiness, emergency shelter and homeless prevention programming that measurably reduces the experience of homelessness and poverty for 850 individuals and families annually in near-west Cook County. Over the past two years, AmeriCorps members have been integral to West Suburban PADS' success in measurably reducing homelessness, and to the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry's work to improve access to public benefits. We intend for AmeriCorps members to continue playing a strategically prominent role in delivering comprehensive programming that comprises the services we provide those who are homeless and low-income in near-west Cook County. Specifically, those roles include 1.) outreach and engagement in the overnight emergency shelter and within the community, 2.) provision of supportive and basic-needs services, 3.) employment readiness counseling, 4.) interim housing case management, 5.) aftercare case management to prevent a return to homelessness, 6.) public benefits coordination and 7.) financial literacy training. At the end of the three-year period August 1, 2012 -- July 31, 2015, this project will contribute to achieving the following goals as stated in West Suburban PADS' 2011-2013 strategic plan: 1.) reduce the length and frequency of shelter services, 2.) improve access to employment income supports and housing services and 3.) improve life skills (i.e. financial literacy) and increase housing retention for those previously served by the emergency shelter. This project will focus on the CNCS focus area of Economic Opportunity. The CNCS investment of $133,000 (2012-2013) will be matched with $59,575 from other public and private sources.
