Vets Frame Homes, Raise Awareness on National Mall

A construction project in the shadow of the Washington Monument brought 40 AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA national service members to Washington, DC. to assemble frames and construct accessible ramps for new Habitat for Humanity homes during the 2013 Veterans Build on the Mall June 2-5.

Veteran Builds Homes, Rebuilds a Life Through AmeriCorps

A U.S. Air Force veteran, Regina Best was recently homeless and became so passionate about service that she spent months building homes for others before finding one for herself. Now in her own apartment and back in school, Best is determined to keep serving well beyond her AmeriCorps term.

AmeriCorps Indian Tribes Planning Grants FY2013

AmeriCorps planning grants provide up to $75,000 for a one-year period to provide support to an Indian Tribe for the development of an AmeriCorps program that will engage AmeriCorps members in order to address pressing community problems. Planning grant recipients are expected to be better prepared to compete for an AmeriCorps program grant in the following grant cycle. Planning grants may not be used to support AmeriCorps members.

National Service: Supporting Veterans and Military Families Fact Sheet

Service members make tremendous sacrifices and learn invaluable skills while protecting and serving our nation — they build a stronger America. Many veterans face challenges in translating those skills into meaningful community engagement, and too often, our industry leaders fail to make strong connections to one of America’s greatest assets.

AmeriCorps Works for Veterans and Military Families

As an Iraq War veteran, I am honored to work at the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). We are home to more than 70,000 AmeriCorps members, whom we are celebrating as part of AmeriCorps Week.

I work with these national service leaders and our other programs to find ways to support wounded warriors, veterans, and their families.

Military Mom Makes Time to Volunteer

“Where do you find the time?” is a question that could be posed to many parents, but the 2012 Volunteering and Civic Life in America (VCLA) report shows that many in this group are carving space in their busy schedules to help others in their communities. Allison Moore, a military spouse and mother of three young children in Missouri, is a prime example.
