This past year, we engaged millions of Americans in high-impact service, meeting pressing needs in communities across the nation. Working hand in hand with thousands of local partners, our members and volunteers improved lives, expanded economic opportunity, and strengthened communities. As 2013 draws to a close, let’s take a look back at some of our favorite national service moments.

CNN Hero of the Year Gets Boost from National Service

Chad Pregracke, 2013 CNN Hero of the YearFor the past 15 years, Chad Pregracke has made it his life’s work to clean up the Mississippi River and other American waterways, mobilizing more than 70,000 volunteers to remove seven million pounds of garbage from rivers across the country.

Service to Country, Service to Others

In Gen. George Washington’s farewell orders to the Continental Army, he encouraged the soldiers who united in battle to not only maintain their bond as a “patriotic band of Brothers” but to carry forward the virtues they had learned during military service when they returned home. His wisdom still rings true today, as we see example after example of our soldiers continuing to serve their communities after their military commitments end.
