2013 Service Impact Award Winners Revealed

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) recognized seven outstanding programs and participants with the 2013 National Service Impact Awards.

CNCS CEO Wendy Spencer announced the honorees during the kick-off of the yearlong AmeriCorps 20th Anniversary celebration in Washington, DC, on September 20, 2013.

Thank You, AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates

It’s back-to-school time. In the upcoming weeks, children across the country will be asked this quintessential question: “What did you do this summer?”  The answer for nearly 3,000 Baltimore elementary students may surprise you.

With the help of 93 AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates, they practiced reading and writing. More importantly, they had lots of fun in the process!

Federal Agencies Announce First Round of School Turnaround AmeriCorps Grants

An innovative partnership to help improve the nation’s persistently underachieving schools took another step forward today as the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) announced the first grants for the new School Turnaround AmeriCorps program.

Seize the Summer: Keep Kids Active and Engaged in Learning

Did you know students can experience learning loss when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer months? On average, students lose the equivalent of two months of math and reading skills during the summer months. More than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities.

Serving Together, as One America

This week, I had the opportunity to speak at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service here in Washington, DC. Sponsored by Points of Light, the conference is the world’s largest annual gathering of volunteering and service leaders and supporters.

I also announced that President Obama and the First Lady will host a celebration at the White House, on July 15, 2013, in honor of the 5,000th Daily Point of Light award.

National Service Agency Announces $200 Million in AmeriCorps Funding

As thousands of service leaders gathered at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service, Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) today announced $200 million in new AmeriCorps funding to put AmeriCorps members on the ground in communities to tackle some the toughest challenges facing our nation.

AmeriCorps Indian Tribes Planning Grants FY2013

AmeriCorps planning grants provide up to $75,000 for a one-year period to provide support to an Indian Tribe for the development of an AmeriCorps program that will engage AmeriCorps members in order to address pressing community problems. Planning grant recipients are expected to be better prepared to compete for an AmeriCorps program grant in the following grant cycle. Planning grants may not be used to support AmeriCorps members.

School Turnaround AmeriCorps Intent to Apply Deadline

The new School Turnaround AmeriCorps is an exciting initiative that will provide resources to serve disadvantaged students in underperforming schools across the nation. Today, April 2, 2013, is the deadline for applicants that wish to participate to submit a Notice of Intent to Apply for the grant program.

Topics related to unmet educational needs within communities, especially those that help at-risk youth to achieve success in school and prevent them from dropping out.
