The purpose of the new initiative is to encourage collaborative community problem solving that increases students' academic and civic engagement while improving the odds that they will stay in school and graduate from high school.

Denver, CO—An AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) wildland-firefighting team has been deployed to Kentucky to battle blazes in the Daniel Boone National Forest. The four NCCC members, who are based in Denver, have fought three different fires since they arrived in the area over the weekend, performing initial attack, night operations, mop-up, holding and containment assignments.

Washington, DC—Four thousand middle school students will participate in service-learning projects this summer, funded by the 2010 Summer of Service grants from Learn and Serve America, a national service program administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The agency awarded grants totaling $2 million to 17 nonprofits, universities and schools to engage at-risk youth in grades 6 through 9 in innovative service projects that address environmental and disaster preparedness issues.

Washington, DC – Americans have answered President Obama's call to service, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which reported a significant increase in the number of volunteers and the volunteer rate in 2009. According to the BLS report released today, 1.5 million more Americans volunteered between September 2008 and September 2009 than did in the previous year. Approximately 63.4 million people, or 26.8 percent of the population, volunteered through or for an organization in 2009 compared to 61.8 million in 2008.
