The Corporation for National and Community Service has awarded 48 organizations grants under its Senior Corps Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) to engage seniors in service projects that address national problems facing local communities.The RSVP Programs of National Significance grants, which total more than $ 1.2 million, will support current RSVP grantees throughout the U.S. in mobilizing 4,000 senior volunteers to help mentor children, support independent living for seniors, promote energy efficiency and meet other critical community needs.

Washington, DC – Despite difficult economic times, the number of Americans volunteering in their communities jumped by 1.6 million last year, the largest increase in six years, according to a report released today by the Corporation for National and Community Service.The Corporation's annual Volunteering in America report found that 63.4 million Americans volunteered through a formal organization last year, giving more than 8.1 billion hours of volunteer service worth an estimated $169 billion.

Washington DC – The Board of Directors of the Corporation for National and Community Service has elected Mark Gearan to serve as Chair and Eric Tanenblatt to serve as Vice Chair, continuing a tradition of bipartisanship that has been a hallmark of the board since its creation. The bipartisan leadership team has extensive experience in the service movement, both having worked at the Peace Corps and served on the Corporation’s board.  They bring a keen understanding of the American political process, having served in senior government positions under four Presidents.
