Today Governor McAuliffe and First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe announced that the Commonwealth of Virginia is the first state in the nation to become an Employer of National Service, encouraging AmeriCorps and Peace Corps alumni to put their skills and experience to work for Virginia state government.

Peace Corps Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet and Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) CEO Wendy Spencer today joined U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Richard Cordray in pledging to help public servants and national service participants, including Peace Corps volunteers and AmeriCorps members, reduce their student loan debt. The agencies are among the first federal agencies to take CFPB’s public service pledge on student debt.

The Social Innovation Fund (SIF) at the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) today announced an investment of $33.7 million in seven of the nation’s leading grantmakers. The investments, which were announced at the live-streamed opening plenary of the SIF’s Annual Grantee Convening, will help grow innovative, evidence-based organizations that work on youth development, economic opportunity, and healthy futures. $18.1 million in continuation funding was also announced for existing grantees to sustain program growth.

Funded by a $10 million grant from the Citi Foundation, ServiceWorks will engage 225 AmeriCorps members over three years to help 25,000 underserved young adults (men and women) in 10 cities develop the skills they need to prepare for college and careers. It will be the nation’s largest corporate-sponsored AmeriCorps VISTA program and will build a large-scale volunteer response to the crisis of low college and career readiness.
