As America enters the holiday season searching for unity at a time of division, a new federal study shows that volunteer service is a core American value that can help build bridges among Americans. The annual Volunteering and Civic Life in America research, released today by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) shows 1 in 4 Americans volunteered through an organization and nearly two-thirds helped their neighbors last year, demonstrating that service to others continues to be a priority for millions of Americans.

Today Accenture becomes one of the largest private-sector companies to become an Employer of National Service, an initiative led by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and the Peace Corps that recognizes the unique skills and experience that AmeriCorps and Peace Corp alumni bring to the workforce. The announcement is being made today as part of Accenture’s annual Day of Service.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), today announced more than $13 million in funding for Pay for Success (PFS) projects through its Social Innovation Fund (SIF). Announced by Lois Nembhard, acting director of the Social Innovation Fund, at the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management Fall Research Conference in Washington, D.C., this funding includes awards to four new organizations selected as part of SIF’s Pay for Success program and winners of a pilot program focused on utilizing data to demonstrate impact, as well as continuation funding to existing grantees.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps, announced the second annual Tom Harkin Excellence in AmeriCorps Awards to five AmeriCorps members and programs from around the nation. The winners were announced at a national gathering of AmeriCorps programs in Washington, D.C. last week.

On Friday, October 7, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will host hundreds of AmeriCorps members at its headquarters to celebrate a major milestone for the national service program that started in 1994: surpassing 1 million AmeriCorps members.

On Sunday, September 5, AmeriCorps, in collaboration with local organizations, will open a Volunteer Reception Centers (VRC) to serve the New Roads area. Through VRCs, AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams (A-DRT) will lead community volunteers in a blitz effort to clear debris from flood survivors’ homes. VRCs will operate each weekend in new locations.

Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and fellow Student Conservation Association team members of Reed McWilliams who passed away last evening. A resident of Alaska, Reed joined national service to provide environmental education programming to New Hampshire’s residents and visitors, and complete conservation service projects that improve and protect the state’s cultural, recreational, and natural resources. The safety and health of our members are our top priorities, and we are working with Volunteer New Hampshire and the Student Conservation Association to ensure Reed’s fellow members, the staff with whom he worked, and those whose lives he touched through service have access to counseling and other services that will help them through this difficult time.
