10 Ways Your Institution Can Get Involved

Here are ten ways that your institution of higher education can partner with the Corporation for National and Community Service.

  1. Join the Corporation's goal to engage 5 million college students in service by 2010.

  2. Apply for grants available from the Corporation in order to help us reach our goal of supporting 300,000 college students in service.

  3. Ensure that 20 percent of your Federal Work-Study funds are devoted to college students who engage in community service, or provide other incentives for volunteering.

  4. Match the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to encourage AmeriCorps alumni to attend your institution.

  5. Provide a full-time person to coordinate and support service on campus.

  6. Offer service-learning as a part of your core curriculum (in at least one discipline or school major).

  7. Incorporate service-learning into your teacher-training programs.

  8. Encourage innovative models of tutoring and mentoring.

  9. Sponsor other promising innovations that renew and strengthen the commitment of students to civic life.

  10. Ensure that reflection is a part of a structured volunteer or service experience to encourage critical thinking about how community service is related to the obligations of citizenship.
