This year, I had the opportunity to spend my Valentine's Day with soldiers and military families to share my appreciation for all they do and to reaffirm the Administration’s commitment to support our service members and their families.

Earlier today, First Lady Michelle Obama sent this letter to military families and military family service organizations. We wanted to share it with you as part of our commitment to serve to our military families. Dear Friends: On Thursday, I am joining some amazing military families on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and I hope you are able to watch.

On the eve of Veterans Day, I wanted to write with a simple message to our nation’s veterans: Thank you. Over the past two years, I have joined with our First Lady to explore the issues faced by our service members and their families – while they are deployed and once they return home. In my work and travels, I am always inspired by the commitment of our military service members and truly grateful for al they do for our country.

On Veterans Day, we honor the brave men and women who have risked their lives to protect our freedoms. As Americans, it is our solemn obligation to not only honor them with our words, but to support them through our deeds. Veterans and the families that support them deserve our respect, gratitude, and service – on Veterans Day and throughout the year.

Last week CNCS CEO Patrick Corvington joined President Obama to honor thirteen outstanding Americans from across the country who have “performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens” with a 2010 Presidential Citizens Medal. All of the recipients are remarkable; living examples of the importance of service in addressing our nation’s most pressing challenges.
