    In celebration of AmeriCorps Week, AmeriCorps VISTAs – past and present – gathered at Busboys & Poets in Washington, DC on May 11, 2011 for an evening of readings and reflections. Inspired by the author, Maureen O’Connor, and contributors of Knocking on Doors: VISTA Volunteers Remember 1965-1971, alumni and currently serving members shared the impact of service on their lives and careers.

    As part of our celebration of AmeriCorps week, we wanted to share the story of Elmer Weaver, a former AmeriCorps and Peace Corps member. Weaver knew that he wanted to give a year of service after he graduated college, so he applied to both AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps. As luck would have it, he was accepted into both programs. Weaver decided that a year with AmeriCorps NCCC would prepare him for a year in the Peace Corps, where he later served in Azerbaijan. Watch his story:
