Acting CEO Robert Velasco, II, honored the Steinbrenner family for their commitment to making their community stronger with the President's Volunteer Service Award. The Steinbrenner family has dedicated themselves to a diverse group of New York- and Tampa-based charities, including the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, Hank's Yanks, and the Boys and Girls Club of Tampa Bay.

Much of their work is performed through the Yankees Foundation which has provided funding for hundreds of athletic, recreational and educational programs for young people and the community. The Steinbrenner family's philanthropy and volunteerism is performed in the spirit of their father, George M. Steinbrenner, who believed that charity is best performed with anonymity.

The award was given by the Corporation for National and Community Service as part of their ongoing collaboration with the New York Yankees and HOPE Week. Created to recognize the individuals and organizations whose acts of goodwill provide hope and encouragement to their community, the New York Yankees HOPE Week is in its third year. Each day, an honoree is surprised by Yankees players and staff. Then later, the honorees attend that night's game as guests of the team.
