Summer of a Million Books
Summer is a time for fun in the sun, but it is also the time when many students experience summer learning loss. By not picking up a book throughout the summer months kids go into the upcoming school years steps behind those who have. Reading 5 books during summer vacation can help combat the effects of summer learning loss. For many students access to books is the biggest challenge.
United We Serve: Let’s Read. Let’s Move is working with Reach Out and Read to alleviate this problem. Reach Out and Read, the nationwide school readiness program, today launched a bold new campaign to give brand-new, age-appropriate books to one million children in need before Labor Day.
The Summer of a Million Books campaign unites Reach Out and Read pediatricians and family physicians at 4,500 hospitals and clinics across the country in their mission to prepare America’s youngest children to succeed in school. This incredible organization serves 3.9 million children annually through 4,500 participating programs, which are located in every state in the U.S., including Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Together, they distribute more than 6.2 million books every year. Reach Out and Read is serving more than one-third of children living in poverty and more than 25% of U.S. military families.
Together, United We Serve: Let’s Read. Let’s Move. and Reach Out and Read look to utilize service to solve the problems created by summer reading loss. Help harness the potential of a young student—donate a book today.
