Patrick Corvington, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, delivered the commencement address at the University of Texas at San Antonio’s spring graduation ceremonies. Representing the Obama Administration, Patrick spoke about service as an option for the class of 2010.

Patrick noted the 3,000 volunteer hours UTSA students contributed to their local community and applauded the campus’ United to Serve effort, wherein 300+ students, faculty and staff collaborated to clean up graffiti, read to children and organize food banks.

You are the service generation. You have made service central to your lives. You expect it from yourselves. You expect it from the communities where you live. And you expect it from the companies and organizations where you’re going to work,” said Patrick.

UTSA students’ enthusiasm for volunteering is part of a larger national trend. The graph below clearly demonstrates the growing interest in AmeriCorps.

If you are a graduating student and considering AmeriCorps as your next step, note that there are thousands of opportunities to serve. Each one provides an incredible opportunity to make a difference in your life and in the lives of those around you. Whether your service makes a community safer, gives a child a second chance or helps protect the environment, you have the ability to find solutions and make a difference.

In closing, Patrick said that while we cannot predict our futures, we surely can create them. In addition, Patrick charged the graduates with not only creating futures, but doing their part to make the world a better place.
