It Takes a Village
Boston Public Schools (BPS) and three community-based nonprofit organizations propose to enlist 24.232 AmeriCorps MSYs to provide academic interventions and supplemental instructional support in four BPS turnaround schools. It Takes a Village is a collaborative initiative that will provide diverse AmeriCorps members with the comprehensive, unique, evidence-based training and support necessary for catalyzing school turnaround efforts for English Language Learners (ELL) in grades K-8, providing targeted interventions with students in mathematics and English language arts. From August 2013 through June 2014, 20 full-time members and 20 minimum-time older adult members will serve 1,220 BPS ELL students in one-on-one tutoring, small group engagement, and broader classroom and afterschool programming. 85% (1,037) of these ELL students receiving tutoring will exceed the growth and performance of ELL students not receiving tutoring by 15% on the national ACCESS English language proficiency assessment; the Assessment Technologies Incorporated (ATI) formative assessments in English and math; and/or the national Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) summative assessment in English and math. The CNCS investment of $322,259 will be matched with $255,196.
