Jefferson County School Board
Twenty full time AmeriCorps members will provide instructional assistance in the areas of reading and mathematics to elementary, middle and high school students in grades one through nine at the district's elementary and middle/high school. The members will work under the direct supervision of highly effective, state certified teachers and will be supported by the schools' reading coaches. The AmeriCorps members will provide one to one and small group assistance to students in the subject area of English Language Arts (vocabulary, fluency and text comprehension). Supplemental instructional assistance will be driven by the needs of students as identified by state and local assessments and progress monitoring tools. At the end of the three-year project, AmeriCorps Jefferson Excel will improve the academic performance of at-risk students, specifically in the areas of reading. This improved performance will be evidenced by seventy percent (70%) of the first and second grade student who participated in the project improved performance on the Stanford 10; sixty percent (60%) of students in grades three through nine who participated in the project improved performance on the reading subtest of the FCAT 2.0. The project will focus on the CNCS focus area of education. The CNCS investment of $266,000 will be matched with $113,376.00 cash and in-kind.
