School Turnaround AmeriCorps Commission State Competitive FY 2013
Heart of Florida United Way, (HFUW) is proposing support to recruit and manage 20 AmeriCorps members to significantly enhance and strengthen the current Schools and Communities: Together for Tomorrow initiative in Orlando, implemented in 2011 as a pilot, and serving as a national model. The members will serve in four eligible Orange County Public Schools to help students improve academic performance and attendance through in-school/after-school tutoring and mentoring activities, enrolling 240 students in year one and increasing each year. The project aligns with the mission of Corporation for National and Community Service, to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering, specifically through the CNCS focus area of Education and increasing the number of students who are achieving in the classroom and beyond. The proposed CNCS investment of $266,000 will be matched with $195,452.
