The School Board of Gadsden County
Gadsden County School District (GCSD) is the only school district in Florida that is primarily minority with over 60% African-Americans , 30% Hispanic/Latino and almost 9% English Language Learners (ELLs). Over 90% of all public school students participate in the free and reduced lunch program (FRL). This project will target the districts two Tier I high schools and will focus on reading interventions for the lowest performing at-risk students. Twenty full-time AmeriCorps members will provide adult mentoring services to identified students designed to increase student attendance by linking students to social service agencies and support emotional and social needs and to re-engage students in the instructional process to improve academic proficiency. They will also provide one-on-one tutoring designed to retrieve credits and accelerate student performance in reading. Parents will be critical partners in student success. The project period will start August 2013. The primary project outcome will be a 10% increase in reading learning gains for at least 50% of the targeted students. Monetary and in-kind matching requirements of at least 24% ($63,561) will be provided through the NCLB Title I and Race to the Top program in the form of human resources, technical, data, and evaluation services. The CNCS anticipated funding amount will be $264,959.00 per year for the three-year period.
